Jonathan, a trainer in Designer Life’s Ipswich Career Training Centre, conducted a presentation on his experiences being deployed as a Police Officer as part of the Federal Intervention in the Northern Territory. This was due to the Little Children are Sacred Report. Jonathan brought along some artwork, hunting spear and didgeridoo he was presented with by members of the community as a thank you for efforts in engaging with the community.

“I worked and lived in Peppimenarti Community for 6 months. During this period, we established a Police station and worked hard to gain the trust and respect of the community members.”

Jonathan explained to all the Designer Life participants the importance of us understanding the previous history between Police and indigenous persons in the Northern Territory as well as the emotions due to Little Children are Sacred Report. He explained the importance of being community minded and engaging with the community meeting their needs.

“We were welcomed into the community and developed a strong bond and trust between community members and the police.” Jonathan said.

The Ipswich participants were very engaged during the presentation and they all highlighted the importance of all of us needing to continue to work towards reconciliation.

We are very happy and proud to have Jonathan share his unique experience during NAIDOC week.
